The presentation will focus on the use of Twitter as a political communication tool outside election campaigns, by top politicians and leading political journalists in France. Through a qualitative approach, based on interviews with members of this group, the uses and media logic of Twitter for politicians and journalists will be examined, through the prism of three major communication functions of Twitter: monitoring, disseminating and interacting. Whereas the second of these functions is often seen as being dominant in political communication, the importance of the other two should not be underestimated, even though they are often invisible to the researcher working on corpora of tweets. The question of reciprocal following and interactions via direct messaging through Twitter is notably a major use which is rarely considered in academic literature.
